2016 First Dance Wedding Songs

One of the most discussed topics during consultation is picking a song for the first dance.

I can remember how much work it was when Talar (my wife) and I had to choose one. Every road trip was a song listening marathon. A constant "next/skip" and the occasional "hum...maybe." We were no different than most. For couples this is one of the very few things that is just for them. You want the song to have meaning - lyrically, emotionally and spiritually. It's the only time the couple gets to themselves all night.

So how do you pick the right song? Start by asking yourself a few key questions:

  1. Is there a song that reminds you of each other or your relationship already? Perhaps from a first date or even your first kiss.

  2. Do you want your first song to be from a specific artist (e.g. Frank Sinatra, Julio Iglesias, Harout Pamboukjian), genre (e.g. Jazz Standard, R&B, Pop, Country, Tango/Rumba) or language (e.g. English, Armenian, French, Spanish).

  3. Do you want the song to be a classic (e.g. Etta James - At Last, Nat King Cole - Unforgettable) or more current (e.g. Adele - Make You Feel My Love, John Legend - All Of Me)?

Answering those few questions will make the hunt for the song significantly easier.

For my wife and I, we were dead set on it being an Armenian song. We just couldn't decide if it was a classic or a modern. More than the words of the song, we wanted the artist singing the song to represent it faithfully. In the end we chose Hripsime Hakopyan's Hokis. For most, this was an obscure choice, but it spoke to us. To top it off we call each other "hokis" therefore, it was fitting. To this day, this song reminds me of my wedding day. At at the end of the day, that's what the first dance should do!

I've curated a playlist of modern Armenian songs on YouTube to play on those road trips! Click here for the playlist.

And, if all else fails, you can also do something completely out of the box like these guys!

Happy Dancing!
